skidmoreowingsmerrill Designed as a net-zero-energy building—one that harvests as much energy from renewable on-site resources as it uses—the Kathleen Grimm School for Leadership and Sustainability at Sandy Ground sets a new standard for energy efficient schools in New York City. Photovoltaic panels on the building’s roof and facade generate energy, while skylights and reflective ceiling panels amplify natural light. SOM’s design also engages students as active participants in achieving the school’s energy goal. Interactive dashboards present real-time data on energy usage and production, providing immediate feedback on energy choices and fostering healthy competition among classes and grade levels.
