skidmoreowingsmerrill Located in Oakland, California, the glass-enveloped slatted wood frame structure of the Cathedral of Christ the Light provides extraordinary luminosity within the sanctuary. Crowning the space is a “vesica piscis” oculus ceiling, composed of triangular aluminum panels that both admit light and dramatically illuminate its own undersurface. In addition to lighting, music also enlivens the cathedral—one of the building’s two organ canopies, which are designed to complement the form and materiality of the interior, is visible in this photo.
